We know that reading instructions is boring but if you want to gain the most from this site, read on.

Are you sitting comfortably?   We are!

Check your position now. How are you sitting? Are you square in front of the screen? You may think, ‘I’m young and healthy, I don’t need to worry about this stuff’ but you really do. Riding is a physical sport and you need to be fit to do it well. How do you think that you can sit straight and tall on a horse or pony if you spend hours slumped over a computer screen?

Is the screen approximately level with your eyes so that you do not have to

look up or down and strain your neck?

Check the time, when did you log on, make a note of it. Do not sit any longer than an hour in front of the screen without taking a break. Sitting for too long can become frustrating. Frustration is bad for computers!

Taking short breaks is not only good for your body, it is also good for your brain! Scientists have found out that we can only concentrate properly for about 20 minuets, after that we are inclined to drift off and very little is learnt. Has this ever happened to you at school?

Language

Obviously, I do not know you and I do not know how well you can use the English language and horsy language.  It is important that you keep a log of new words that you meet on this site, and that you describe what they mean to you, so that you can look them up when you need to and can use them when talking to other horsy people.  Include all the new words, not just the horsy ones!

How to learn about Horses and Ponies

You do not need to take long breaks, but get up and do something physical for a few minutes, put some music on and dance or do a few squats to loosen up the muscles.  Click here to find out how to do squats.

                                                                Symbols

We use a few symbols on the site that you need to know.

This star means that there is an activity for you to do.

This light bulb is a reminder for you to give your brain a rest and take a break!

Click on the link below to find out more ways to get this information out of the computer and into your brain.  As human beings, our brains have evolved to filter out information as we sleep.  Just think of all the things you see, hear, touch and think of in one day.  If we kept it all in, our brains would just explode!!

Making your senses work for you.

This page will help you have more control over what stays in!

This site has been designed to give you breaks from reading by the use of quizzes and other activities, but physically taking short, active breaks will improve the way you learn. Do take part in the exercises. You may feel that you are too old for some of them, but they are designed to encourage you to use your imagination. Imagination helps you understand the topic and is a key tool in learning. You could also try this with school topics!
