You are also keen to know how to handle ponies safely, so that you do not upset your new pony by doing something wrong.  Click on the link to find out about handling ponies.

You have seen several ponies that you liked but have settled on a quiet, kind pony who is ten years old and very well mannered.  Click on the link to go to ‘Design a Pony’ and decide on your ideal mount.  Would any of the ponies on this page be your ‘perfect pony’?

Your own Pony

Imagine that your dreams are finally going to come true and you are going to have your very own pony.  Of course, you are wildly excited and can’t wait to actually have a pony, but your parents insist that you know how to take care of it first.  They want you to you train for your Pony Club D test before they will buy you one.  You will have to care for the pony each day.  To help pay for its keep, your pocket money will be stopped and you will have to do household chores for extra money.

Obviously, you are over the moon with joy and want to start looking for the right pony as soon as possible, but you realise how big a responsibility it will be to care for another life, so you begin studying for the test straight away.  Click on the link to find out about the Pony Club and the D test.  (Do not worry if you do not belong to it, we are just using it as an example of the things you need to know in order to care for a pony).

You are determined to prepare yourself properly for this new challenge.  You will learn!!!  But you wonder why this has been so difficult in the past, why the things you read really do not stay in.  This is because you  have not had the tools you need to make it stay in.  We will help you with that. Click on the following link to help you gain the most from this site, Before you begin.

An important tool is being organized, knowing where you have put various bits of information.  Click on the link to find out how to organize your new information and what you need to include in your  pony file.

You have decided that the first thing you want to find out is what makes ponies  tick, what do they think?  What do they feel?  Why do they behave as they do?  This is called the psychology of horses and ponies and is a huge subject, but make a start and click on the link to go to About being with ponies.

Your pony has a saddle and bridle that fit her well so you do not need to change them.  Click on the link to check that you can name the parts of the saddle.  Click on the link to check that you can name the parts of the bridle.  You will need to keep her tack clean and in good condition so that it does not rub her and cause sores or break and cause injury to her or to you.

You will be keeping her at grass at your local riding school.  Click on the link to go to About Riding Schools and satisfy yourself that you will be placing your pony in a yard that knows what it is doing and has the knowledge to properly care for your pony.  The school has a large yard and stalls where you will be able to bring her in from the field and groom her.  Click on the links to find out what you need in your grooming kit and why you should groom.

The riding school is very friendly and there are qualified grooms and instructors who will help you if you have a problem with your pony, but the day to day care of her is your responsibility.  You must check each day and in all weathers to see if she is safe and happy.

The yard looks very nice, it is tidy and the ponies seem well cared for.  The grooms look smart in their jods and shirts but some of the liveries (pony owners) wear all sorts of things like tight shorts, baggy tops, and you even spotted one girl with huge earrings in her pierced ears.  You are worried about what you should wear on the yard because you want to fit in, you don’t want to look silly in the wrong clothes, but you want to be safe.  Click on the link to find out about what you should wear around the yard, Clothes to work in.  You are also keen to know what to wear to ride in, so click on the link to find out about Riding clothes.

Although you plan to keep your pony at grass, there may be times when you need to bring her in and keep her stabled, she may be ill or injured, or you may want to keep her clean before going to a show or Pony Club rally.  In any case, she will be stabled in the isolation quarters for the first two weeks in her new home.

This is to make sure that she does not bring any diseases to the yard.  It protects the horses and ponies that are already there, but it is not very nice for your pony.  She will miss her old friends and probably be quite confused.  It is your job to help her adjust to her new home by giving her lots of attention and time.  Be careful not to spoil her by giving too many titbits because you feel sorry for her.  Remember that you must still be firm with her and insist on good manners.

I talk about ‘your pony’ when you may not actually own a pony.  Owning a pony is not as important as caring for and loving the pony. When you are looking after or riding a pony, he or she, is your pony for that time.

Of course, you want to be able to ride as well as possible before actually owning your own pony, so click on the link to find out about equitation.

I will guess that your pony is a mare and call it ‘her’ from now on.  Click on the link to go to ‘Ages of the Horse’ and find out about how we refer to male and female horses and ponies.

The people that you are buying your pony from will deliver her to you properly protected in travelling rugs and bandages but she does not have any of her own. Later on we will show you how to design her own personal wardrobe.
