The Course.

I have been involved in teaching and learning for most of my adult life.  I ran a lively showing and livery yard for twenty years  and then undertook a degree in psychology, followed by a teaching certificate and one in counselling.  I now lecture at Westminster University.  My main role is to support students as they begin their degrees by introducing them to different types of study skills and methods to improve memory.

I have found that, by the time students reach university, they are quite set in their ways and find it difficult to try out new techniques.  They are, of course, under a great deal of pressure to complete assignments and, understandably often prefer to use the methods they know and are familiar with.

The aim of Poniesonline is to use your child’s love of horses and ponies and their desire to learn about them to enhance their general learning abilities.  To equip them with the skills they need to succeed at school and university.

Research shows that we learn best when study skills are embedded into a course of study - not shunted onto one or taught alone.  Poniesonline does this.

Module 1 is currently available and is aimed at children who are just starting to learn to ride.  It covers the basics of riding and handling ponies safely.

There is a final task to be submitted in order for the children to be awarded a Certificate of Achievement, rosette and pony painting set.

I really want to appeal to their imagination and there are several creative tasks within the module, one of which is to ‘design a pony’.  When they have completed this on paper, they can then turn their ideas into a kind of reality with the model pony painting set.

The final task also includes some number work.  I have not given instructions as to how to this as I want children to view teachers and parents as a resource to be used to help them with their learning and that there can be a cross over between school and life!

Module 1 costs £47.00.

Your child will receive a password that allows access to all the course material and continuous email support for however long it takes for him or her to complete it.  When completed to an acceptable standard, your child will receive the certificate, rosette and pony painting set.  Please let us know if your child has a specific learning difficulty or problem with any part of the course.  It has been designed to build on skills so that children will pass it and so gain confidence in their abilities.

Module 1 also introduces the following study skills:

Organisation in study

Simple research

Active reading - students are asked to make up their own questions before reading the text.  This ‘primes’ the brain to scan for the answers and so processes the information more deeply.

Comprehension, followed by quizzes to test understanding.

Observational skills - students are encouraged to complete ‘pony watching’ tables.

Language skills - students are encouraged to record all new vocabulary that they find on the site.

Attention span - as the optimum attention span for learning is 20 minutes, students are reminded to take frequent brakes.

Ergonomics - not exactly a study skill, but an important factor to consider if your child is to spend a considerable amount of time in front of a computer.

Intra-personal understanding - a series of questionnaires to help students  develop an understanding of self.
